The great hindrance to all true wisdom is the thought that we have already attained it (Plumptre). “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.” (Stephen Hawking) You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. [Meaning, you can lead a human to the truth, but you can't make him believe it!] Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it. [Most don't know what's good for them anyway.] A fool and his money are soon parted. How can I be out of money? I still have checks left. Huh? Worrying doesn't get the stump out of the ground. [Work is the only solution.] When one door of opportunity closes, another one opens up. [Opportunity doesn't come looking for you; you have to go looking for it! Don't be lazy.] Common sense is not so common. [Remember, you can't buy any; you either have some, or you don't.] If you follow a fool, you are a bigger fool yourself. When arguing with a stupid person, make sure he is not doing the same thing. Don't toot your own horn. [No one likes a person who brags on themselves often. A persons actions speak louder than their words!] Be nice to people on your way up because you might meet 'em on your way down. Either fish or cut bait. (Work or make way for those who will!) Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege. [Tell me about it!] When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep; not screaming, like the passengers in his car. [Uh oh!] I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it. [At least he is honest.] Don't allow yourself to become offended so easily! [Don't be easy to anger. You'll always be angry. Try doing it differently.] When you find yourself in a hole, quit digging! [The key is recognizing you are in a hole. Stop doing what is causing your problems. Again, do it differently.] He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer! [It takes him a little while to catch on. Give him some slack, please.] His elevator doesn't go all the way to the top. [Sounds like he needs to invest in a knife sharpener.] I was born at night, but it wasn't last night! [I've got more sense than you give me credit for.] You can't get there from here. [You have to go somewhere else first!] [He'll have to think about that for a while. Remember, he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer.] Close only counts in hand grenades and horseshoes.
