History Of Khodiyar Mandir Trust
History of Shri Khodiyar Mandir Trust The Shri Khodiyar Mandir Trust is one of the most respected religious institutions in Gujarat, centered around the Shri Khodiyar Mandir in Rajpara near Bhavnagar. This sacred temple, dedicated to Khodiyar Mata, is not only a spiritual landmark but also a historical and cultural treasure. The temple and the Trust represent centuries of devotion, royal patronage, and community service. Understanding the history of this institution requires exploring the deep-rooted worship of Khodiyar Mata and the visionary leadership that helped shape the temple into what it is today. The Origins of Khodiyar Mata Worship The worship of Khodiyar Mata dates back to the 13th century, during the time of Maharaja Ranji Gohil, the ruler of the Gohil dynasty in the Vana region of Gujarat. Khodiyar Mata emerged as the Kuldevi (family goddess) of the Gohils and was soon revered by the broader community as a Lokdevi, or goddess of the people. Her divine image as a protector and provider made her a central figure in the spiritual lives of people across the Saurashtra region. Legends describe Khodiyar Mata as a powerful deity who rode a crocodile, protected her devotees, and upheld righteousness. Over time, her stories became deeply ingrained in local culture, passed down through generations, and reflected in folk songs, festivals, and oral traditions. Early Development of the Shrine As the following for Khodiyar Mata grew, Maharaja Wakhatsinhji of the Gohil dynasty took the initiative to construct the first official shrine dedicated to the goddess at Rajpara, near Bhavnagar. Although it was a modest structure, it became a spiritual center for the local population. Pilgrims began to visit regularly to offer prayers, seek blessings, and celebrate festivals in her honor. The shrine stood as a symbol of faith and devotion for many years. However, as the number of visitors increased and the importance of the site grew, it became evident that a larger, more organized facility was needed to accommodate devotees and maintain the sanctity of the place. Transformation under Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji A significant chapter in the history of Shri Khodiyar Mandir began with Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Gohil, a devout follower of Khodiyar Mata. He played a crucial role in transforming the humble shrine into a magnificent temple and turning Rajpara into a major pilgrimage destination. Understanding the spiritual importance of the site and the needs of devotees, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji invested heavily in the temple’s expansion and infrastructure development. Under his leadership: The original shrine was renovated and expanded into a grand temple complex. A well-constructed road was built to connect the temple to Bhavnagar and nearby areas. A railway station, named Khodiyar Mandir Station, was established to ease access for pilgrims traveling from distant places. A hospital was constructed along the way to serve both locals and pilgrims. A lake was developed in the nearby Bhal region to support wildlife and maintain ecological balance. A water-pumping system was installed to ensure a continuous supply of clean water to the temple and its surroundings, parts of which are still in use today. These developments reflected Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji’s vision of blending religious devotion with public welfare. He saw the temple not only as a place of worship but as a center for community service and cultural unity. Establishment of the Shri Khodiyar Mandir Trust To ensure the temple's long-term preservation, management, and growth, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji formally established the Shri Khodiyar Mandir Trust in 1953. The founding of the Trust marked a critical step in institutionalizing the temple’s operations and setting up a structured system for its administration. ![]()
