Moong dal, rice and other spices go into the popular South Indian salty and spicy dish known ven pongal recipe. Usually, it is served for breakfast with sambar and coconut chutney. This dish is most famous in Tamil Nadu, but it is also popular in other South Indian states.
There are many healthy breakfast recipes available in South Indian cuisine. Usually, these are fried or steamed dishes made from rice or lentils. Pongal, also known as Khara Pongal or Spicy Pongal is one such simple recipe.
I prefer sakkarai pongal over ven pongal recipe but not as a breakfast dish but as a dessert. however, in recent years, khara pongal has become a regular part of my day, especially for breakfast. It is simple to prepare, easy to make and, most importantly, healthy. The fact that it can be made without vegetables is also the best part of this dish. Rice, moong dal, dry fruits, and spices like black pepper and ginger make up the basic recipe. However, I also use vegetables like finely chopped carrots, beans, peas, corn and even onions. However, this is only a variation; If you are only interested in the standard spicy pongal recipe, please keep it simple.
The ven pongal recipe as i mentioned earlier is easy to prepare but there are some tips, modifications and suggestions. firstly, while making this recipe, i strongly suggest to use equal quantity of rice and moong dal. Some people prefer a 2:1 ratio of rice and moong dal, but for the best flavor, use a 1:1 ratio. secondly, you can use any kind of rice in this recipe. however, the most preferred rice for this recipe is sona masuri rice or raw rice. lastly, before using rice and dal in the recipe, roast them with a spoonful of ghee. In fact, it will aid in the aroma release of the dish. Having said that, the rice and dal are to be lightly roasted, not browned. So let's know how to prepare Ven Pongal recipe.
