The concept of cladding isn't limited to thick plates for industrial tanks; it also applies to wire and sheet products, offering unique benefits in electrical and thermal applications. Two prominent examples are aluminum clad steel wire and stainless clad aluminum. While both are composite materials, they serve very different purposes and are chosen for distinct sets of properties. Aluminum clad steel wire, often referred to as aluminum clad steel or aluminum clad wire, combines the high tensile strength of a steel core with the excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance of an aluminum outer layer. This makes it ideal for overhead electrical transmission lines, where strength is needed to span long distances without sagging, and conductivity is needed for efficient power transfer. Conversely, stainless clad aluminum is a sheet product that pairs the corrosion resistance and aesthetic qualities of a stainless steel surface with the lightweight, thermal conductivity, and cost-effectiveness of an aluminum core. This material is valuable in applications like cookware, architectural panels, and heat exchangers, where a stainless steel surface is desired for hygiene or appearance, but the weight and cost of a solid stainless sheet are prohibitive.
