Food Facts: Why Eggs Aren’t Dairy Products | |
Many people may think of eggs as dairy because you often find them in grocery stores alongside dairy products, and they may also be used together in a recipe. However, eggs and dairy are completely different types of food as they come from a very different source. Dairy foods come from the milk of mammals (cow, goat, sheep). Dairy products consist of milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, cream, etc. Dairy foods consist of lactose, a sugar found in milk which may cause digestive consequences if someone has lactose intolerance. Eggs come from birds (laying eggs). Eggs do not consist of milk or lactose in any way, shape, or form. Biologically, eggs are reproductive cells and have nothing to do with milk production. Nutritionally, eggs offer a high-quality protein source, B vitamins (B12 included), vitamin A, choline for brain health, and omega-3 fatty acids. However, eggs do not contain calcium or lactose to be found in dairy. Recognizing the difference between eggs and dairy is helpful in dietary practices, particularly for individuals with lactose intolerance or milk allergies. Unless they have an allergies to eggs, eggs are safe for individuals who are avoiding dairy. In summary, eggs are not dairy - they are a completely different food source! | |
